Set the API key for your centre

Centre Managers and admins can save an encrypted OpenAI key for their own centre.

For: Centre Manager, Super Admin

  1. Check the centre name, then open AI & budgets → AI & spending. In API key for your centre, paste its OpenAI key and select Save centre API key. The field stays blank after saving.
  2. Keys are encrypted in the database. The encryption secret is stored separately on the server, never in the application code. Teachers and students cannot manage or view the saved key.
  3. A centre without a saved key cannot make new AI requests. It does not use another centre's key. Tutoring, marking, voice, images and background work all use the centre's own key and app budgets.
  4. To replace a key, paste a new one and save. End the centre's live voice calls first. A stale form asks you to refresh. Remove centre API key clears it and blocks new paid requests.
  5. Saving makes no paid call and does not verify credits, enable tutoring, or raise allowances. If AI is paused, check the key and credits and select Resume after fixing credits or key.
  6. A retained server key is labelled. Replace it with the centre's own OpenAI project or account key for independent provider spending. Separate keys in one account can still share its billing.
